Many of Draper’s books focus on the experience of Black Americans or of racial tensions in the U.S. Several of her books have won local and regional awards as well. She’s won five Coretta Scott King Book Awards (one of which was for Copper Sun) and has had several of her novels listed as ALA Best Books. Over the course of her career, she’s won awards both for her teaching and for her writing. A decade later, Draper retired from teaching to focus on writing instead. The resulting short story, “One Small Torch,” won a writing contest sponsored by Ebony magazine. In 1990, one of her students challenged her to write something of her own. Following the completion of her education, she began teaching high school in Cincinnati. She earned a bachelor’s in English from Pepperdine University and went on to pursue a master’s in English from Miami University of Ohio. She was an avid reader as a child, devouring almost every book in her library’s children’s section by age 11. Draper, the oldest of three children, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. While there is technically a month between the date of the letter and the earliest x-date, congressional calendars showed Monday that there are only eight legislative days this month when both the House and Senate will be in session at the same time. "Because tax receipts through April have been less than the Congressional Budget Office anticipated in February, we now estimate that there is a significantly greater risk that the Treasury will run out of funds in early June," wrote CBO director Phill Swagel. The Congressional Budget Office also revised its estimate for the so-called x-date on Monday. On Monday, President Joe Biden called the "big four" congressional leaders - Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, McCarthy and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries - to invite them to a May 9 meeting at the White House to discuss the debt limit, a White House official told NBC. Goldman Sachs' latest estimate this week put the deadline at some point in late July, though the bank's economists acknowledged that weaker-than-expected tax receipts could advance that timeline. This date is earlier than Wall Street economists were expecting. Prosper, on the other hand, had started out as a single building serving triple duty as general store, bar, and livery for the few settlers around. A boomtown might be more exciting than a town like Prosper, and people could make a lot of money in such places, but mining towns tended to die as soon as the ore played out. A man could tell a lot about a place just by looking at the people on the streets, and by that standard Prosper was quiet, steady, and - well - prosperous. It would never be anything more than a small town, but it was neat and bustling. Lucas Cochran had been back in town for almost a month, but it still amazed him how much the little town of Prosper had lived up to its name. For many years, Natchez has enjoyed a notoriety for the inhumanity and barbarity of its inhabitants, and the cruel deeds perpetrated there, which have not been equalled in any other city in the Southern States. In response, he would rather be thought of as malevolent, hurting people’s feelings at will, but he says the truth is that: “I couldn’t make myself anything … neither a scoundrel nor an honest man, neither a hero nor an insect”. He knows “the highest and the best”, but he accepts that he’s not one of them and that the standards they set are unattainable, even though he was the only civil servant he knew not to be taking bribes. In chapter 1, The Underground, he directly addresses the readers, trying to win them over to his viewpoint. In particular, he wrote in reaction against Nikolai Chernyshevsky’s novel What is to Be Done? (1863), which argued for the means of production to be reorganised according to co-operative ideals.ĭostoevsky’s central character, however, will not work readily with anyone. Dostoevsky rejected the idea that people act in accordance to reason or their best interests and asserted the need for them to be able to behave as they choose, without fitting into Enlightenment ideas of “progress”. Certainly, the author identified strongly with his protagonist, calling him the “real man of the Russian majority”. As well as referring to Notes from Underground as the first existential novel, some critics, including Leonid Grossman, have ascribed Underground Man’s opinions to Dostoevsky. Sometimes what starts out as fake can get all too real. I also felt the story developed an underlying preachy feel to it, towards the end of the book, which didn’t really work for me. Having said that, although I enjoyed the book, it isn’t one that I would want to read over and over again. I rarely read science fiction, but I still enjoyed The Taking. The world has gone to hell overnight and it is up to Molly and Neil to try and figure out how to survive, what has caused this calamity and what-if anything-can be done about it. Not to mention the occasional walking, talking dead person. They encounter unusual animal and plant life. It’s not just the weather that has gone to pot though, as Molly and Neil soon discover. The rain may be strange, but even stranger weather conditions await an unsuspecting world: blue snow, purple fog and, huge waterspouts that suck up seawater at a rate of 200,000 gallons a minute. Molly is still pondering on this when she sees low, sinuous shapes moving under the window. At 2 am Molly gets up and goes downstairs planning to do some work on her new novel, but when she looks out of the window and notices the strange quality of the rain she stands a while and tries to figure out the reason behind the downpour’s luminosity. Molly’s husband, Neil, has no such worries he’s sound asleep. Molly Sloan lies restless in her bed and cannot sleep. It is sudden, it falls hard, and it is luminescent. The Taking is not so much a horror novel as a cross-genre piece that melds horror and sci-fi. |
